1. Why was General Soleimani an important target for the airstrike?

Soleimani led Iran's intelligence and covert military operations and was an important, dangerous military leader.

2. How did the Department of Defense (the Pentagon) justify this attack?

The Pentagon says that Soleimani was planning to attack Americans in Iraq and that Soleimani was responsible for the death of hundreds of American military servicemen. Also, the Pentagon says that the attack will deter future Iranian aggression in the region and to America.

3. How have Iran's leaders responded to the US attack?

Iran's president, Rouhani, and the Ayatollah promised to take revenge on America.

4. How has President Trump responded to Iran's promises of "revenge"?

If Iran retaliates, Trump plans to attack 52 Iranian sites that are "very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture."

5. Why have some said that Trump's response would be considered a war crime?

Foreign minister Zarif says that attacking cultural sites is a war crime under international law.

6. What impact has this attack on Iran's leadership had on normal Iranian people?

Iranians mourned their loss and became angry towards America, vowing that they will get their revenge.

7. How has the government of Iraq responded to the US attacks on Iranian leadership?

The Iraqi parliament passed a resolution demanding that US troops leave the country.

8. What was the 2015 Nuclear deal between Iran and the Obama Administration? 

Under the Iran Nuclear Deal, Iran is required to limit the number of its centrifuges, uranium enrichment, and uranium stock. In return, the US lifts sanctions on Iran.

9. What did President Trump do to the Iranian government because he disagreed with the deal?

Trump pulled the US out of the deal and imposed sanctions on Iranian oil. He also targeted their capacity to trade.

10. Which parts of the deal does Iran say it will stop following?

Iran will no longer limit its low-enrichment uranium stock and expand its enrichment and research of uranium.

11. Which parts of the deal does Iran say it will continue to follow?

Iran will still allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to monitor its nuclear research. Iran will rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal is sanctions against it are removed.
